Train to Ayuthaya boat to bangkok?

My friends and i wanted to save by going to ayuthaya by traim but we also want to splurge on a river cruise to bangkok going back. Is it possible or do we really have to go to a tour company to get by boat? And also how much is the price if we go by way of travel agents?
