Is there a way to hire a wedding photographer without paying a fortune? Is it normal for them to cost so much?

I know you get what you pay for, but I have a small wedding and $2500 seems over the top! I missed the boat, I should have been a wedding photographer, sheesh! Has anyone had luck with art students? The photographer is going to be the most expensive part of our wedding, even more money than our Disney World honeymoon. Is this normal?
